Tavistock -- gateway to Cornwall and west Devon mining world heritage site. Tavistock straddles the fast flowing river Tavy, below the western edge of Dartmoor. Tavistock stands in the heart of an area of tremendous natural beauty. It is a classic west country market town, with a population of approximately 12,280 ( as of 2011 ). The old streets radiate from Bedford Square and contain shops of every taste and need. You can trace its recorded history back to at least 961 when Tavistock Abbey, whose ruins lie in the centre of the town was founded. Tavistock`s most famous son is Sir Francis Drake.
Abbey cloisters -- the cloisters of the Benedictine abbey adjoined the abbey church. This is the only arch that survived.
Tavistock Parish Church.
Monument of Francis 7th Duke of Bedford.
Guildhall -- built in 1848 by the Duke of Bedford, on a site once occupied by the Mill of Tavistock Abbey. This building replaced an earlier guildhall that stood in Bedford square. It`s duties as a courthouse ended in 2001.

Abbey Still House -- marking one of the corners of the abbey precinct, the still house was where the monks distilled, for medicinal purposes, herbs from their nearby garden. It was restored in 1884.

Now this town is something else. The history is amazing as well as the structures. Add to the mix Sir Francis Drake and you have a most interesting locale. I do like the buildings that are there. The Abbey looks most interesting and, of course, well built. From what I know that is quite typical of them. The countryside is very beautiful as well. Your granddaughter seems to be enjoying herself! As she should in such a beautiful place. This is something else, my friend. You have done well with this location. Keep it up, I like it a lot.
