GROSMONT. ( a day out ).

Grosmont is a village and civil parish situated in Eskdale in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, within the boundaries of the Scarborough district of the county of North Yorkshire, England. Population 318. We were there mainly to photograph the Engine Sheds. There is a very good second hand book shop in Grosmont which I thoroughly recommended. Its across the road from the station.

This tunnel is believed to be the worlds earliest passenger railway tunnel. Built between 1833 and 1835 by George Stephenson as part of the Whitby to Pickering railway. The first carriages to run through this tunnel were horse-drawn and only carried up to 10 passengers. Today you have to walk through this tunnel to get to the engine sheds and workshops.

This rail vehicle is unique in the UK. It is a tri-cycle inspection trolley formerly used, up until 1982, on the Norwegian State Railways. This particular unit was operated on the Kroderen to Vackersund line in central Norway spotting for track defects and lineside fires. Its capable of speeds up to 20 mph and has a crude Ferodo plate brake pad on the front wheel.

  1. There just ain't nothing like a train. No matter if it is one from the 1800's or one of the newer ones, they exhibit to me the true meaning of power. I admit to really have a love affair with the older steam locomotives. Whether they are coal or wood fired, the are just fantastic. I like the sheds as well. Great subject matter! Great photos! Great guy taking the photos! What more can one ask for???
