KIRKSTALL ABBEY.

Kirkstall Abbey is a ruined Cistercian Monastery in Kirkstall, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is set in a public park on the north bank of the river Aire. It was founded in 1152 by abbot Alexander, it was disestablished during the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Kirkstall Abbey was acquired by Leeds Corporation and opened to the public in the late 19th century. The Gatehouse became a museum (Kirkstall Abbey House Museum, which i have already covered ). The Abbey is a grade 1 listed building and scheduled ancient monument.

The Warming House.---- between November and Easter each year a fire burned in this room so the Monks could warm themselves. Only this base of the fireplace survives today.

  1. The architecture of this period in time never ceases to awe me. I just love it. The domed ceilings and the arches. What is amazing is modern man has a difficult time duplicating this type of structures. We certainly can’t do it with the technology that they had back in that time which we like to call “primitive”. What we call primitive is downright great stuff! Good photos and good subject. Good going, Les!
