MISSILES, BOMBS, ROCKETS # 2.

RAYTHEON SPARROW.

Air to Air missile.

The versatile sparrow missile was a medium range semi active radar homing air to air missile and for over forty years was the west`s principal beyond visual range ( BVR ) missile. This American missile was often fitted to aircraft alongside the short range sidewinder. In service its replacement is the AMRAAM. Ship launched variants of the missile were also produced.

BRITISH AEROSPACE SKYFLASH.

Air to Air missile.

Length - 12 feet 1 inch. Range - 31 miles. This is a British development of the American Sparrow missile. It has much improved fusing and a more advanced homing system. An extremely accurate missile the Skyflash`s short warm up time and active radar guidance allows the pilot to fire and forget, freeing him to concentrate on other targets.

HAWKER SIDDELEY SRAAM.

Air to Air missile.

In service - development only. Length - 8 feet 11.5 inches. The Vietnam war highlighted the need for a new short range air to air missile ( AAM ). 1970`s technology allowed the design of a highly sophisticated missile designated SRAAM ( short range air to air missile ). This tube launched weapon used thrust vectoring to gain enormous agility. In 1974 it was abandoned for political and financial reasons and eventually replaced with the multi - national ASRAAM programme.

HAWKER SIDDELEY MATRA AS - 37 MARTEL.

Air to Surface Anti - Radiation tactical missile.

In service - 1985. Length - 13 feet 6 inch. Range - 37 miles. Martel was a collaborative venture between the United Kingdom and France. Two very different versions were built, one designated `AJ - 168` which had a TV guidance system and the other designated `AS - 37` with a radar seeker. The British used both; The French only the radar version. This version homes on radar transmissions from the target.

DOUGLAS SKYBOLT XGAM - 87A.

Air launched Ballistic missile.

Skybolt was introduced for use by the USAF B - 52H Stratofortress and the RAF Vulcan B.2 Bombers. Full scale development began in 1960. Powered and guided flight tests began in 1962 but the first five were failures. Technical difficulties and rising costs led to cancellation in May 1962. Length - 38 feet 3 inches. Range - 1,100 miles.

BRITISH AEROSPACE SEA WOLF.

Ship - Board Surface to Air missile.

The system was designed to give smaller warships protection against anti ship missiles and aircraft. It has been used operationally in the 1982 Falklands conflict and the 1991 Gulf war. In the former conflict Sea Wolf missiles accounted for five successful kills from only eight launches.

BRITISH AEROSPACE SEA DART.

Ship - board surface to air missile.

The Sea Dart was a replacement for the first generation Sea Slug missile. It equipped types 82 and 42 destroyers and Invincible class Aircraft Carriers. Used in the 1982 Falklands conflict it was credited with eight confirmed kills. In the 1991 Gulf war, the Sea Dart equipped HMS Gloucester successfully defended the Battleship USS Missouri from an Iraqi Seersucker missile. This was the first confirmed missile to missile combat at sea. Length - 14 feet 4 inch. Range - 55.56 miles.
