It was one of the most advanced tanks of it`s era, and at the time of it`s introduction in 1966 had the most powerful main gun and most effective armour of any tank in the world. The chieftan also introduced a supine ( reclining backwards ) driver position, enabling a heavily sloped hull with reduced weight. It remained in service until replaced with the Challenger 1.

NOTTINGHAM.

Nottingham is a city in Nottinghamshire, England. Nottingham has links to the legend of Robin Hood and Lace making, Bicycle making ( notably Raleigh bikes ) and Tobacco industries. It was granted its city charter in 1897 as part of queen Victoria`s diamond jubilee celebrations. Nottinghamshire is also the county where I live.

NOTTINGHAM CASTLE.
constructed in 1068 on a sandstone outcrop by the river Leen. The Anglo Saxon settlement was originally confined to the area today known as the Lace Market and was surrounded by a substantial defensive ditch and rampart, which fell out of use following the Norman Conquest and was filled by the time of the Doomsday survey in 1086.

YE OLD SALUTATION INN.

is a public house dating from around 1240 that lay`s claim ( along with ye olde trip to Jerusalem inn ) to being the oldest in Nottingham. The current building was constructed as a workshop for a Tanner with living accommodation above in 1240on the site of an old alehouse known as the Archangel Gabriel salutes the Virgin Mary. During the English Civil war ( 1642 - 1646 ) both factions established recruiting rooms in the inn. Following the Puritan victory the authorities objected to the religious implications of the sign and the inn was renamed Soldier and Citizen. The original name was restored along with the monarchy in 1660.

YE OLDE TRIP TO JERUSALEM.

is one of several pubs in England which claim to be the oldest. The pub building rests against Castle Rock on which Nottingham Castle is built. The pub claims that it was established in 1189 AD. However there is no documentation to verify this date. The earliest parts of the current building date from around 1650. The pub is attached to several caves carved out of the soft sandstone of Castle Rock, which were originally used as a brewhouse for the castle, and which appear to date from around the time of the construction of the castle in 1068 AD.

SEVERN`S HOUSE.

This medieval merchants oak framed house originally stood on Middle Pavement. In 1969, when the area was cleared to build the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre, it was dismantled and rebuilt on Castle Road near Nottingham Castle. Unfortunately many other fine buildings in the area were lost. In 1735 John Severn used the building to start a wine importing business. Over the years the building was altered and extended, but only the medieval part was saved. It is now the Nottingham Lace Centre, showing the history of and selling Nottingham Lace.
